Sept. 16 Gene Sparling Featured Artist at the Arkansas Craft Gallery
Saturday, Sept. 16, the Arkansas Craft Gallery’s Featured Artist, Gene Sparling, woodturner and sculptor, will be in the Gallery between 10 and 5. Gene describes his fascination with wood saying, “Layer upon layer of intricate designs are contained within a piece of wood and is infused with the patterns of nature.”
As a child Gene began learning wood craft from his father, an amateur carver and craftsman. He has always had an interest in nature, natural habitats, forms and materials. He has made a home in the Ouachita Mountains near Hot Springs.
Sparling began pursuing his artistic vision in wood in 2008 and by 2011 was receiving notoriety for his elegant wood pieces. His work was selected for inclusion in Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art’s museum store offerings of original work by contemporary artists, as well as the Arkansas Craft Guild and the Ozark Folk Center, in Mountain View. His work is also currently represented by Justus Fine Art Gallery in Hot Springs, the Argenta Gallery in North Little Rock, and the Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock.
Exhibitions of Sparling’s work include: 2017 Materials Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition, Denton, TX; 59th Annual Delta Exhibition, Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock (2017); Aspects of Abstraction in the Trinity Gallery of the Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock (2010); Arkansas Sculpture Invitational Show and Sale, Argenta Community Theater, North Little Rock (2012, 2013); Sculpture at the River Market, Little Rock (2016, 2013, 2011).
