Linda Rawlings teaches “Cyanotype on Fabric” June 24 at the Arkansas Craft School (Posted by Ginger Smith)

A 19th Century Alternative Photography Process –  Cyanotype is a simple printing process producing a cyan-blue print. It was used by engineers to produce easy copies of drawings, and is the origin of the term “blueprints”. The process involves treating the paper or other media with a chemical solution and using a sun (or UV) exposure process to create a beautiful cyan-blue print.

Applying Cyanotype to Fabric – In this class students will learn how to capture patterns of nature and other objects on silk as well as paper and other fabric. Working with a silk scarf students will learn the best methods of creating original designs on clothing, home décor items such as placemats, table clothes, napkins and pillows. Students are also welcome to bring their own fabric items, such as t-shirts or a tote bags, for additional printing surfaces. Students should bring to class dried or pressed flowers, leaves, feathers, or other translucent objects or objects with intriguing contours with which to create your designs. A look at the latest in solar printing in various other colors will be explored.
