June Events at Newport – Music, Farmers Market, Movies, Fundraisers, Among Others!

On Wednesday, June 6, 2018 there will be a Fishing Derby at Lockwood Park in Newport. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., safety training begins at 9:45 a.m. and the Derby will begin at 10:00 a.m. Lunch and fishing poles will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. The Bright Star Children’s Theatre will be back in Newport on Friday, June 8 thanks to Farmers Electric. “Upcycled Cinderella” begins at 10 a.m. at the Jackson County Library, and “Happily Ever After” at 3:30 p.m. at the Newport Business Resource Center, 201 Hazel Street. Both shows are free!

The Downtown Newport Farmers Market will officially open for the season on Saturday, June 9 at 7 a.m. Vendors will be selling lettuce, cabbage, squash, peas, blackberries, a variety of baked goods, handmade soaps, plants, bedding flowers and much more! The market will be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 7 a.m.

The ASU-Newport Movies in the Park will be held on Saturday, June 9 featuring Moana from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Movies are held in the Front Street park in downtown Newport. In the event of inclement weather, movies will move to the Newport Business Resource Center, 201 Hazel Street. Free for all!

A Memorial Service will be held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the loss of Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford on Tuesday, June 12. The memorial and prayer service will be held at the Veterans Park in downtown Newport, Front and Walnut Streets, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Following a short service, everyone will be encouraged to participate in a balloon release. Balloons to be provided by Purdy’s Flowers & Gifts.

The Newport Athletic Booster Club and Harris Ford are teaming up for the 3rd annual Booster Blitz fundraiser and “Drive For Your School” event on Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Become a Booster Club member and take a spin in your favorite new Ford vehicle. For every test drive, Ford motor company will donate $20 to the Newport Booster Club. This is an easy, fun way to support Greyhound athletics. Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Becoming a Booster Club member on Saturday, June 16th enters your name into a drawing for two St. Louis Cardinal tickets. Drawing will be at 2 p.m., you do not have to be present to win. Blackout dates apply.

Charlotte Taylor & Gypsy Rain will be performing at the next Arkansas Steel Associates Bluesday Tuesday Concert on Tuesday, June 19 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Front Street park. Free admission, concessions will be provided by the Downtown Newport Farmers Market. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to Frankie’s Place, 306 Front Street.

On Wednesday, June 27, The Artist in U art workshops presented by Unity Health will be held for elementary age children (first through sixth grades). Maggie Maddison will highlight acrylic painting from 10:30 to Noon and Carol Davis will teach paint pouring from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Space is limited for both workshops, so please RSVP by calling 523-3618 to reserve your child’s spot.

This month’s River Country Concert will feature The Roadies on Thursday, June 28. Sponsored by M&P Banking, Insurance and Investment Services, the concert is free and fun for all ages. Show begins at 7 p.m. on the Terry Scoggins Memorial Stage in downtown Newport. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move to Frankie’s Place, 306 Front Street.
