The Calico Rock Museum Foundation has begun work to restore the historic wall along upper Main Street in Calico Rock. The effort will include cleaning and repairing the concrete wall that has been badly damaged from decades of erosion and wear. Once repaired, artists will paint a new mural on the wall depicting the history of the community.
“This could not be possible without a very generous donor who believes in the community revival that is happening,” noted foundation treasurer Wayne Wood. “The project restores a part of our history and showcases the art of our community, both are important to the museum.”
Originally, Main Street was called Wall Street because a wall literally ran in the middle of the street. There was an upper street and a lower street. Before the bridge was built over the White River, the wall was pushed back closer to the buildings on upper Main Street and the road widened.
