Calico Rock’s Annual Bootlegger Daze on March 11 Plans

The Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center is finalizing plans for the annual Bootlegger Daze on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The event will take place along historic Main Street from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event commemorates the 1974 film “The Bootleggers” which was filmed in and around Calico Rock.

This year’s celebration will include a reunion of anyone who played a part in the movie, including anyone that has stories about the movie’s production or its stars. “The Bootleggers” starred Jaclyn Smith in her first starring role.  Smith later became famous as one of “Charlie’s Angels.” The movie also featured Slim Pickens who, at the time the movie was filmed, was a much bigger, well-known star.

The family of Dwight and Verda Long will be donating the internal framework for the jail that was used in the movie. The jail will be placed as a historical marker where it sat during the movie along Railroad Street beside the Calico Rock Museum. The jail will be dedicated and received from the family at a ceremony at 11:00 a.m. The Bootleggers Film Reunion will be a part of the ceremony.

Other events during the day will include food vendors, citizens arrests (with bail of $5-25 to support the museum’s new art center), the showing of the “Bootleggers” movies at 1:00 p.m. in the Museum (cost is $1 with popcorn and cokes available), and the Moonshine Band playing along Main Street.

If you would like to be a vendor, have a story to tell about the movie, have movie memorabilia to share, or want to be included in the Bootlegger Daze event, call the Calico Rock Museum at 870-297-6100.
