Author Presents Historical Stories in the Old Independence Museum
Dozens of stories about the early days in the Arkansas Ozarks will be shared in a program by Dr. Brooks Blevins in the Old Independence Regional Museum at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August  26. He will be introducing his newest book A History of the Ozarks, Volume 1: The Old Ozarks and will sign books after the program.
This volume is the first in a three-volume set and tells the history of the Ozark region from the days when Native Americans hunted and trapped the hills and hollers until the migration of tens of thousands of settlers from east of the Mississippi River.
In gathering the facts about generations of life in the region, Blevins writes about people as they hunted and trapped, farmed, mined, created early industry, established churches and schools and argued over politics.
Dr. Blevins is the Noel Boyd Professor of Ozarks Studies at Missouri State University in Springfield. An Izard County native and Lyon College graduate, he is the author or editor of eight books, including Hill Folks: A History of Arkansas Ozarkers and Their Image and Ghost of the Ozarks: Murder and Memory in the Upland South.
