Museum to Host Native American Fall Homeschool Day
Old Independence Regional Museum will host its annual Fall Homeschool Day on Monday, September 30 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. This year’s theme is “Native Americans” and will explore the history of indigenous peoples in Arkansas from prehistoric and historic eras.
Participants will learn about Arkansas’ earliest people, organized communities of Native Americans who predated European arrival. After European contact brought diseases and death, Arkansas was populated by several native societies before their systemic removal by the United States government. Students will have the opportunity to experience the history of our state’s first inhabitants through lessons, activities, and museum artifacts.
Pre-registration and a $7 participation fee are required by Friday, September 20. Late registrations will be accepted through Friday, September 27, with a $10 participation fee. Entry for parents is free. Registration forms are available online at www.oirm.org, on the museum’s Facebook page, or at the museum, located at 380 S. 9th Street in Batesville. Old Independence serves a 12-county area: Baxter, Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Marion, Poinsett, Sharp, Stone, White, and Woodruff. Parts of these present-day counties comprised the original Independence County in 1820s Arkansas territory.
