Calico Rock Museum System Updates including Days and Hours Open! (Posted by Ginger Smith)
Beginning next week, we officially become the Calico Rock Museum System. The Heritage & Visitor Center (our original museum complex) will include our history museum, visitor center, Murphy Gallery, and Artisan Gift Shop. The Tom Tomlinson Art & Science Center will include the new art museum, science center, Barbara Farris Loft for special exhibits, boardroom, and Brushstrokes Gift Shop.
Beginning Monday, the Heritage & Visitor Center, will begin opening six days a week. The hours will be Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Tom Tomlinson Art & Science Center will officially open to the public next Thursday at 10:00 a.m. The Center, itself, is a work of art in the beautifully and painstakingly restored Historic Floyd’s Grocery Building. We are really excited for you to see inside when we take down the black plastic on the windows next week. This project has been accomplished debt-free in less than a year. The Center will be open Wednesday 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m., Thursday-Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
The main floor contains works of art of local, regional, state and American artists, many of whom are well known in the art world. The ground floor houses the science center including an exhibit on the human heart sponsored by the Blue & You Foundation, an exhibit on dinosaurs, and the Crime Lab Detective. At opening, we will also have a special exhibit on Stop Gap Animation.
The Barbara Farris Loft contains beautiful works of art by local artists, the boardroom, an archives, and a space for special exhibits.
The main floor also contains the Brushstrokes Gift Shop which will feature toys, t-shirts, jewelry, works of art, and items for visitors to town.
With the opening of the Art & Science Center, our museum team is turning our attention to renewing the history exhibits in the Heritage & Visitor Center. If you have ideas on new exhibits, we would welcome your input.
Finally, we are welcoming a Civil War Traveling Exhibit in the renovated Murphy Gallery of the Heritage & Visitor Center which will open on Monday, October 9 and run until Saturday, October 27.
