Arkansas Craft School Schedules Susan Potts -Teaching “Precious Metal Clay Jewelry” June 17-18 (Posted by Ginger Smith) Register by June 9th
This class combines two great sensual experiences, working and shaping in clay, and polishing gleaming silver jewelry. this is due to the ‘alchemical’ nature of the clay. Precious metal clay is composed of metal that has a binder in it that, when fired, burns away leaving fine silver metal behind.
Students begin by forming small objects in clay, learning how to use clay slip and clay in a syringe to form their designs. After firing in a kiln, the pieces are polished and ready to wear. Participants will complete 3 or 4 pieces of jewelry, depending on the size of each piece. Open to all levels of skill.
Susan Potts has always loved jewelry, and discovered she loves making it even more. She began taking classes at a Bead Shop that opened close to her work years ago. On her lunch hour she would browse the different beads and findings in the shop. After retiring in 2011 she was able to go to Young Harris, Georgia, to the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts for a variety of classes. She has studied enameling, cold connections, polymer clay, wire wrapping, silver, and cabochons, and she has achieved Level I and Level II certifications in Precious Metal Clay. While she enjoys all the techniques, she especially enjoys working with the clay. Her husband says she must not have had any play dough as a child because she takes such delight in the clay today!
