St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Batesville welcomes the University of Arkansas Schola Cantorum, March 15, for a public performance at 7:30 pm.

The University of Arkansas Schola Cantorum was founded in 1957 and is currently  led by Dr. Stephen Caldwell. The choir consists of 36 singers representing the most talented cross-section of student vocalists at the University of Arkansas. This flagship ensemble has performed for inaugurations of governors and other heads of state, as well as making numerous appearances at state and regional conventions of the Music Educators National Conference and the American Choral Directors Association. The Schola Cantorum explores a cappella works, masterworks, and global repertoire for mixed chorus spanning the last 1,000 years.

The choir has at least two local ties. Mrs. Sylvia Rich Crosby, of Batesville, was a member soon after the choir was created, and Molly Magouyrk of Batesville is currently a member. Music performed will include works by J.S. Bach, Janequin, de Rone, Eric Whitacre, Bobby McFerrin, and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

The concert is free, but we will pass a hat to help the choir with expenses. A reception for the choir will be held at CIX Main after the concert, at 109 Main Steet. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at the corner of Main St. and 5th St. across from the Municipal building.  Schola will be traveling to Southside High School on the 16th to conduct a workshop with students of Mrs. Angela Weaver before continuing on to perform at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Little Rock.
