Sharp County

hardySharp County was created in 1868 from the western part of Lawrence County.  It was named in honor of Ephriam Sharp, a pioneer legislator from the region.  Evening Shade was named the first county seat, but when the railroad crossed the northern district, Hardy was also made a county seat.  Sharp was one of only a few counties in the state to have dual seats of justice.  In 1967, a new courthouse was dedicated at Ash Flat and the county once again had only one county seat.

springriver The Hardy-Cherokee Village area remains the county’s most popular travel destination.  Old Hardy Town retains its 1920s vintage appearance with craft and antique shops, automobile museum, city parks and bed & breakfast inns.  Cherokee Village offers championship golf courses and relaxed living.  Other attractions include canoeing on the Spring River, hiking or birdwatching in a nearby wildlife management preserve, and musical shows in the area.
